The UNLV golf program's success is due, in great part, to the tremendous support it receives from the community and staff. A great majority of the support falls on the shoulders of assistant coach Andy Bischel.
Bischel is in his 10th season with the Rebel golf program, with responsibilities in academic advising, fundraising and recruiting. The Rebels have won 17 tournaments with Bischel on the coaching staff. Following the 2006-07 season, Bischel was named the recipient of the Jan Strickland Assistant Coach of the Year Award presented by TaylorMade-adidas Golf.
Under Bischel's leadership, the team has averaged better than a 3.0 grade point average and has produced 17 different academic all-conference honorees. The team has a current string of eight straight semesters with a 3.0 GPA or higher and the squad's 3.34 team GPA for spring 2007 is its highest since fall 1996. Bischel has also tutored five GCAA All-America Scholar Award winners.
As a member and co-captain of the swim team at UNLV from 1983-87, Bischel was a model student-athlete. After he earned his bachelor's degree in hotel administration in 1989, Bischel spent four years working for the Marriott Corporation in Orange County, Calif.
The Placitas, N.M., native returned to his alma mater in 1993 to become an assistant coach for his mentor, head coach Jim Reitz, and moved into a full-time position in the UNLV Athletics Department a year later as a member of the Athletic Development/Sports Marketing Department staff.
After five years working at the school, Bischel accepted his current position with the men's golf program in 1998.
"Andy had a solid background in organizational-type work when he joined the Rebel golf program," head coach Dwaine Knight said. "He has done a great job with handling the golf foundation, travel, recruiting and coordinating our offices. He brought a lot of expertise in those areas and a real plan for us administratively."
Bischel, 42, married the former Shannon Swift in 1989, and the couple has two sons, Sean (12) and Ian (10).
