Rebels Off To Best Start In Six Years
UNLV scored two first half goals and then held off a late rally to earn a 2-1 victory over Radford in men's collegiate soccer action on Monday afternoon from Peter Johann Memorial Field. The victory, which came in the final game of the UNLV Rebel Classic, gave the Rebels their first 2-0 start to a season since 2002, while the Highlanders dropped to 0-2 on the year. In the day's other game, Western Illinois topped Jacksonville 3-1. [ + ] UNLV sophomore forward Daniel Cruz scored two goals on the night to carry the Rebels to a 2-0 shutout victory over Jacksonville in the men's soccer season opener for both teams on Saturday night from Peter Johann Memorial Field. The game was the second of the day in the UNLV Rebel Classic, in the first game Western Illinois posted a 2-0 win over Radford. [ + ] The UNLV men's soccer team will open the 2008 season on Saturday when it hosts the UNLV Rebel Classic. Jacksonville will be the first opponent of the season on Saturday night at 7 pm, while a Monday afternoon contest follows at 1 pm against the Radford Highlanders. [ + ] UNLV was picked to finish third in the 2008 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation preseason men's soccer coaches' poll, which was released on Wednesday. [ + ] Season tickets are now on sale for the UNLV men's and women's soccer teams for the 2008 season. The Rebel women are four-time defending Mountain West Conference championships, while the men's team have their sights set on their first-ever Mountain Pacific Sports Federation title. [ + ] Rising sophomore Daniel Cruz, a forward on the UNLV men's soccer team, has been named to the U.S. Under-20 Men's National Team 16-player roster that will compete against the Mexico U-20 squad on July 11, it was announced by U.S. head coach Thomas Rongen last week.
