UNLV will be represented by three members of its men's swimming and diving team as the 2008 Beijing Olympics opens this weekend in China. Alumni Joe Bartoch will swim for Canada, while two Rebels who just completed their eligibility this past spring, Richard Hortness and Jonas Andersson, will swim for Canada and Sweden, respectively. Six current and former members of the UNLV men's and women's swimming programs are participating in the U.S. Olympic Trials, which begins this weekend at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb. The trials will run from June 29-July 6, and swimmers from all over the country will be attempting to make the US Olympic swim team, which will take 26 men and 26 women to Beijing. [ + ]

Rebels Place 11 On Academic All-MWC Team
UNLV placed 11 members of the men's swimming and diving team on the 2008 Spring Academic All-Mountain West Conference team. To be eligible for selection to the Academic All-MWC team, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the school while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on their team. Four Rebels Named Academic All-District
Four UNLV athletes have been voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII University Division At-Large Teams as selected by sports information directors, it was announced on Thursday. Swimmer Johan Claar was named to the men's first team for the second straight year, while Matt Kinsinger of the men's golf team was a second team selection. Kim Bonney of the women's swimming team earned her third career academic all-district honor, as she was named to the first team for the first time, while Elena Gantcheva of the women's tennis team was a second team selection.
